An Important Location as the Foundation of Samani Town

様似町の礎となった重要な場所

"Enrum" means "Cape" in the Ainu language.

「エンルㇺ」とはアイヌ語で「岬」の意味。

This cape was the site of a fort (casi) in ancient times. The highest point is called "Inkarusi" ("Lookout Point"), and is said to have been used as a watchtower.

ここには古い時代の砦（チャシ）があり、もっとも高いところは「インカルシ（物見をするところ）」と呼ばれ、見張り台として使われたそうです。

Long ago, there was a chief in Enrum who possessed the Ipetam (a magical sword that attacked people of its own accord). His enemies attacked the area seeking this weapon, but the battle could not reach a conclusion.

昔、エンルㇺにイペタㇺ（自ら人に斬りかかる妖刀）を持つ長がおり、この武器を狙って敵が攻め込んできましたが、なかなか決着がつきませんでした。

One morning, when the chief of Enrum climbed up to Inkarusi, a large whale had appeared on the opposite bank of the Unbe River, with seagulls gathered nearby. The chief of Enrum was delighted, and ran over to the bank with his friends.

ある朝、エンルㇺの長がインカルシに登ると海辺川の対岸に１頭の大きなクジラがあがり、そこにカモメが集まっていました。喜んだエンルㇺの長は仲間と共に駆けつけました。

But it was a trick by the enemy. The shape was not a whale but a small hill of sand, on which the enemy had scattered fish, attracting the seagulls. This distraction allowed the enemy to steal the Ipetam.

それは敵の策略で、クジラではなく砂の小山で、その上にまき散らした魚にカモメが集まっていたのです。そのすきに敵はイペタㇺを奪いとったのでした。
