Samani River様似川

A River of Treasure Sustaining the Lives of the Samani Ainu

様似アイヌの生活を支えた宝の川

The Ainu people formerly called this river "Tomiesanpet" (River Where Treasure Flows).
This "treasure" was said to refer to a "tuki" (ceremonial cup).

かつて、アイヌ民族はこの川をトミエサンペッ（宝の流れる川）と呼んでいました。
この宝とは「ト゚キ（儀式で使う杯）」のことだと言われています。

According to an Ainu legend, a Wajin (mainland Japanese) once came here on a survey and asked his Ainu guide for the name of the river.
At that time, a great tree trunk had been brought by heavy floodwaters to lay across the river. On seeing this, the Ainu instantly replied, "Samunni" (Fallen Tree). The river then became known as Samunnipet (Fallen Tree River), which was the origin of the name of Samani Town.

アイヌ民族の伝説によると、昔、調査に来た和人が道案内のアイヌにこの川の名前を聞きました。
ちょうどその時、大洪水で流された大木が川の中に横たわっており、それを見たアイヌがとっさに「サムンニ（倒れ木）」と答えたことから、この川がサムンニペッ（倒れ木の川）と呼ばれることになり、それがサマニという町の名前の由来となりました。

The river was also known as "Esamanpet" (Otter River).

またこの川を「エシャマンペッ（カワウソの川）」と呼ぶこともありました。
