Fuyushima no ana-iwa
(Hole Rock of Fuyushima)

A Huge Hole Made by a Single Arrow

"Fuyushima Hole Rock" is a large rock pierced with a hole, located in Fuyushima fishing harbor.

Long ago, the chieftain of a village that was defeated in a battle in the East sent his wife and child to flee, but unable to escape further, they entered the sea, and transformed into a rock (the present-day Sobira-iwa). The chieftain, who had followed his wife and child, entered the sea and he too became a rock.

The enemy chief was greatly angered by the sight of these rocks, and shot a single arrow toward them.
The arrow struck the defeated chieftain's rock first, and split it into three pieces (the present-day Oyako-iwa).

The arrow then struck the rock that had been the wife and child, and finally spun around, soaring high into the sky, and landed on a huge rock on Fuyushima, tearing a large hole through it.
This was called "Puyosuma" or "Puy-o-suma" ("hole", "there is", "rock"), the origin of the name Fuyushima Hole Rock.
