Sobira-iwa (Sobira Rock)

A Rock with an Ainu Legend

Long in the past, the chieftain (Osa) of a village that was defeated in a battle in the East sent his wife and child to flee.

The wife was able to escape to Samani with the child, but realizing that she could flee no further, gave up. Holding her child in her arms, she entered the sea, and transformed into a rock.

The chieftain, who had followed behind, felt at peace when he saw the form of his wife and child. He too entered the sea and became a rock.

The enemy chief, who had also pursued them, was angered by the sight of the two rocks and shot an arrow.
The arrow struck the mother and child's rock and tore through its lower section, and the remaining rock became known as "Sopira Repunge" (Sobira-Rock).

The chieftain's rock split into three pieces, which are now known as Oyako-iwa (Parent and Child Rocks).
