A Small Hill with a Mysterious Legend

不思議な伝説を残す小さな丘

Hotahumpe means "sand whale".
Long ago, the Tokachi Ainu invaded Hidaka and pillaged the land, and their forcefulness enabled them to invade Samani, too.

ホタフンペとは、「砂クジラ」のこと。
その昔、十勝アイヌが日高に攻め込んで各地を荒らし、その勢いで様似にも攻め込んできました。

The Samani Ainu built a fort on Kannon-yama (Mt. Kannon), and barricaded themselves within while the battle raged further.
Desiring to bring the endless battle to a close, the Samani Ainu crossed the Unbe River and built a large sand mound in the shape of a whale overnight.

様似アイヌは観音山に砦をつくって立てこもり、そこで激しい戦いを繰り広げました。
長引く戦いに決着をつけたかった様似アイヌは、海辺川を渡り、一夜のうちにクジラの形をした大きな砂山をつくりあげます。

Upon seeing this the next morning, the Tokachi Ainu said, "We cannot draw our arrows against the king of the sea". They appealed for reconciliation, and the war came to an end.
In the modern-day Nishi-machi district, there is a small mound next to the community hall, said to be a vestige of Hotahumpe.

翌朝、これを見た十勝アイヌは「海の王さまに弓を引くことはできない」と和解を申し入れ、戦いは終わりを迎えました。
現在の西町生活館の傍らにある小山は、ホタフンペのなごりと言われています。
